The BRICS Astronomy Working Group Workshop will be held on 16 - 19 October 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. 

This year the science theme of the meeting will be “Survey Science and Big Data”.

This notice is a Call for Abstracts from those wanting to present a contributed talk at the workshop in the following tracks:

All contributed talks will be 15 min with an additional 5 min for questions and discussion.

Interested persons must submit a title and brief abstract (Maximum 300 Words) on the presentation which the Scientific Organising Committee (SOC) will consider; the closing date for registration and the submission of the abstracts is 21 August 2023. It is anticipated that the final programme will be published by 8 September 2023 with authors of successful abstract submissions advised by 31 August 2023.

Hackathon:

Following two days of the science meeting, we will hold a 1.5 day Data Science Hackathon. Participants will work on machine learning approaches to a data-intensive challenge in multi-wavelength astronomy. The hackathon will make use of the South African ilifu data-intensive research cloud facility. We invite students to attend the hackathon and network with peers in the BRICS data-intensive astronomy community.

Support:

Although there will be limited technical support for remote participants, we strongly encourage participants to attend in person. Local accommodation for international participants will be covered, and both travel and accommodation for South African students and postdocs.
