Calibration and Analysis of Polarized Galactic Emission

Speaker:Dr. Wolfgang Reich

Abstract:Beyond proper scaling of an observation also the absolute zero level is needed for a correct analysis. These data are difficult to obtain with standard parabolic radio telescopes and need to be added from other instruments. In particular the correct interpretation of polarized Galactic emission is largely dependent on a proper zero level setting because vectors are added. Bad examples are discussed. I will pay particular attention to the calibration of the 6cm Urumqi polarization survey providing so far unknown properties of the magnetized interstellar medium, which can not be traced at lower frequencies.
